Jaffery Academy Launches Weather Station – Mombasa, Kenya
Jaffery Academy’s motto of keeping abreast with the latest teaching methods and technology led them to purchase a state of the art Weather Station, which will form part of the school’s teaching programme in the Humanities and Science departments.
The Weather Station was purchased from the United Kingdom and has sunshine, rainfall, wind direction sensors and an anemometer. These sensors are mounted on masts while the thermometer Hygrometer sensor is sited in a Stevenson’s Screen. Daily readings conducted by students have commenced. This will make the study of weather exciting, easy to comprehend and more meaningful for students. The daily readings will assist in plotting of daily, monthly and annual graphs for the immediate environs. The
Academy would like to share this teaching aid with other schools in Mombasa. Plans are underway to invite other schools so that students can see the method of weather station recording.
The Weather Station was officially launched during a colourful ceremony on Saturday 28th June 2008 by the Principal Meteorologist of Coast Province, Mr. Edward Muriuki. In his address, Mr. Muriuki said that he was greatly impressed that Jaffery Academy was attaching great importance to weather information. He went on to add that the information gathered at the station would be used locally, regionally and internationally. This would put the academy on the international arena as far as weather observations were concerned. On behalf of the Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department Dr. Joseph Mukabana, Mr. Muriuki congratulated Jaffery Academy on this great achievement.
The launching of the Weather Station coincided with the celebrations of the birth anniversary of the daughter of the Holy Prophet, Lady Fatema (AS). A number of Qasidas were recited by students from various classes ranging from pre primary to secondary level. There was also the presentation of prizes and certificates to the winners and participants of the Interschool Essay Writing Competition organized by the IRE Department of Jaffery Academy. Eleven schools participated in the Completion which was held on Saturday 24th May 2008.
