Student selected to represent Tanzania at One Young World Forum

Updated 4 December, 2009

Mazaher Sadiq Chagani is a 3rd year B.Sc.Eng Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa.  He is also the Vice President of Projects (VPP) for the University’s AIESEC-UCT society.

AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organizations. It is active in over 1700 universities across more than 107 countries and territories.  The international platform enables young people to explore and develop their leadership potential for them to have a positive impact in society. AIESEC’s innovative development process consists of unmatched leadership experiences, international opportunities and a global learning environment.  When established in 1948, AIESEC was an acronym for Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales.  Over the years the acronym became more popular and became the name of the organisation.

Mazaher took the role as VPP to improve his leadership skills and also saw the position as a chance to give back to the community by making a positive impact.  Mazaher said, ‘Although the new role required a lot of time and energy and added to my already heavy course load, its importance never left the corner of my eye as I knew that in the end I had made a positive impact to the world.’

Mazaher’s involvement with AIESEC introduced him to One Young World (OYW). OYW is a non profit movement which hopes to bring together the global leaders of tomorrow.  Initially launched in Davos, Switzerland at the 2009 World Economic Forum, OYW’s first event will take place in London, in February 2010.  Following a selection criteria, fifteen hundred delegates from around the world will be selected to attend.  This event will be a chance for the youths of today to put forward their opinions and suggestions.  The event will also serve as a platform to make their voices heard on various issues affecting the world today.

Sessions at the OYW event will include:
• World health challenges
• Developing political leadership for a positive future
• Global business and its role in shaping society through the economy
• Interfaith dialogues on religion and spirituality
• Environmental issues and protection
• Media and its changing identity & power

Selected as one of the delegates who will be representing the youths of Tanzania, Mazaher is looking forward to the fantastic opportunity and is working to raise enough funds through co-operate sponsorships to confirm his participation.

The President of KSU Arusha Alhaj Shabbir M. Virjee wishes to congratulate Br. Mazaher Chagani for being selected as a delegate for the One Young World Summit to be held in London in February 2010.  It is indeed a proud moment for Arusha Jamaat.
