The Central Health Board (CHB) organized special training for Laboratory Technicians and Administrators on Thalassaemia awareness, management, data collection and operating the newly acquired Genio S Electrophoresis machine from Italy. The machine was acquired recently with the financial support from The World Federation.

The eight days of training at Ebrahim Haji Charitable Health Centre started on December 27, 2007 and concluded January 5, 2008. The training covered both theory and practical sessions which was conducted by Dr. Sarfaraz Jafri, Project Director, Hussaini Blood Bank, Hematology and Oncology Trust, Karachi Pakistan; he was assisted by Mr. Muhammad Zubair. The training was funded jointly by The World Federation and Africa Federation. Eight Technicians and one Administrator participated in the training program; on completion, they were all presented with certificates at a short ceremony.

CHB is presently in the process of rolling out the Thalassaemia screening program starting with children, teenagers and those girls and boys who are intending to get engaged for pre-marital testing. As soon as the plan is ready, Jamaats will be informed. An informational DVD about Thalassaemia has been produced by CHB and copies were sent out with a circular letter to all the Jamaats to show to its members with the help from doctors or medical assistants to promote awareness and to explain the importance of screening.

A lecture program on Thalassaemia Awareness was organized jointly by the Central Health Board (CHB) and the Central Medical Board (CMB) of Dar Es Salaam Jamaat after Isha prayers on Saturday  January 5, 2008; it was delivered by Dr. Sarfaraz Jafri, followed by question and answer session. Mr. Aunali Khalfan gave a brief explanation about the Thalassaemia project for Africa, He thanked The World Federation & Africa Federation for their financial and moral support; he also thanked, Mr. Hassan Abulo of Mehfil-e-Murtaza and Dr. Munir Datoo, Assistant Secretary General of Health of The World Federation for facilitating the travel arrangements of Dr. Sarfaraz Jafri and Mr. Muhammad Zubair to Dar Es Salaam.
