Free Eye Camp – Mwanzega Village, Tanzania

The Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania organised a free eye camp in Mwanzega Village Mkuranga District on 7 June 2009, wherein 325 people were screened for minor eye ailments. The following cases were detected:

  • 33 Matured cataracts
  • 12 Immature cataracts
  • 24 Presbyopia
  • 8 Photophobia
  • 3 Pterygium
  • 4 Trachoma
  • 2 Glaucoma
  • 1 Blind
  • 15 Conjunctivitis

310 Pairs of spectacles and 182 units of eye drops & ointment were delivered free of charge as prescribed. Moreover, surgeries for Cataract and Trachoma are scheduled for 5 July 2009.

The eye camp was attended by several volunteers and the following optometrists:

  • Dr Timbezi
  • Dr Mohamed Walji
  • Dr A Jumanne

Transportation was provided by Tanzania Road Haulage, Fidahussein & Co and Anverbhai Merali.
