H1N1 Update

Updated 03 November 2009

Within the last month, several more individuals have been infected with the H1N1 Virus, also known as the Swine Flu.  The severity of the illness has also increased.  The following information provides some additional information on the virus.

How contagious is the virus?

  • The virus spreads from person to person through coughing and sneezing
  • The virus can be acquired by touching contaminated objects such as door handles and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • An infected person is contagious 1 day before symptoms appear and until 1 day after the fever has disappeared.
  • Symptoms generally appear 1 to 4 days after getting infected.
What is the difference between Influenza and a cold?
  • Symptoms of a cold are usually nasal congestion and a low grade fever.
  • Symptoms of Influenza are a high fever of sudden onset, cough and mild nasal congestion, severe headache, muscle ache and sore throat.
  • Influenza symptoms are usually severe enough to force you to stay in bed for a  few days
  • Seek medical attention for children with signs of respiratory distress, including rapid breathing, blue lips, and excessive sleeping.
Who is at most risk?

  • Pregnant women
  • Children under 18
  • Adults of 65 with any chronic medical conditions
Are there vaccinations available?
  • There are two vaccines available; one against seasonal influenza viruses and one against the H1N1 virus.
  • Health Canada and the CDC have stated that both can be given safely at the same time
  • Children under 10 will need 2 vaccinations, 4 weeks apart
  • Infants under 6 months cannot receive the flu shot therefore all household members and caretakers of infants should be fully immunized
  • Anyone allergic to eggs should not receive the flu shot
  • The vaccine is not derived from pigs.
  • All published articles in respected medical journals have not identified any concerns in regards to the vaccine.
How can the virus be prevented?
  • Always practice good hygiene
  • Wash hands with soap and warm running water for at least 15 seconds
  • Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also effective where soap and water is not available.
  • Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands
  • Avoid crowds and stay at least 6 ft away from people who are coughing and sneezing.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when you cough or sneeze, never into your hands.
  • Stay home if you develop symptoms of a cold
