The Az Zahra Association celebrated Islamic Women’s Day on 29 June 2008 by commemorating the birth anniversary of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (AS), the beloved daughter of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Az Zahra Association is an agency of The World Federation, carrying out its activities in the region.

Islamic Women’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1992. Islamic Scholars are invited to speak about Hazarat Fatima Zahra (AS). School children are also invited to participate by rendering Qaseedah’s, talks and poems. Apart from speakers of the followers of the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS), a special guest speaker who is a famous Moulavi from Ahl-e-Sunnat (Al Haj Niyas Moulavi) also attended as part of the institution’s interfaith activities.

Gifts in cash were distributed among approximately 30 participating school children. Hijab material packs were also distributed among the participating schools. An essay competition on Hazrat Fatima Zahra (AS) was also organized and 6 prizes were given away to the winners.
The core values of The Az Zahra Association are to increase awareness of Islam and spread the message of our beloved Ahlul Bayt (AS). Sri Lanka has a significant Shia population, with most of them living in very poor conditions.
