Through the Ali Asghar Water Appeal, The World Federation in partnership with the Hussaini Foundation is constructing 7 wells in 7 different villages across Pakistan. The first of these wells is built in the village of Jalab Dero and is now partially functioning; the final concrete platform and plaque work has been delayed due to local problems and is still under construction. The project completion date has tentatively been set for 30 March 2010.
Jalab Dero has a population of about 580 people, where 85 households make up the village. Only 1% of the inhabitants are educated as there are no schools there. There is one mosque/imambargha in Jalab Dero.
All seven villages are situated on hilly plains in the northwest District of Dadu in Sindh. There is no canal system here to facilitate fresh water supply. The people as well as the animals depend on water collected in ponds during the rainy season; this amount is very little and sometimes the villages face droughts. The contaminated water from the ponds are a major source of health problems among the peoples and livestock.
The construction of the second well in Jalab Rind is underway where drilling is in progress.
