Ali Asghar Water Appeal:  New wells, hand pumps and latrines for Lucknow

Updated 2 February 2010

Imagine a world without safe clean water and proper sanitation facilities. Through the Ali Asghar Water Appeal (AAWA), The World Federation will finance the construction of wells, hand pumps and latrines in Lucknow, India where so many Muslims live in deficient conditions.

Thanks to the continued contributions of donors from around the world, we are able to reach out to the struggling families who need these very basic provisions to lead healthier lives.

Working in collaboration with our local partner, Tanzeemul Makatib, the three projects will include:

PROJECT A:  SHALLOW WATER WELLS
In both the urban and rural areas of Lucknow, clean safe drinking water is scarce. As a result, scores of people are facing a water crisis and suffering from viral diseases including jaundice, cholera and stomach problems. Through this project, about 500 residents will benefit from one tube well.

10 shallow water wells for drinking water and domestic use will be built in Lucknow. These wells will be built in 3 phases where:

  • 4 wells will be built in Phase 1
  • 3 wells will be built in Phase 2
  • 3 wells will be built in Phase 3

PROJECT B:  HAND PUMPS
20 hand pumps for drinking water and domestic use will be built in Lucknow. Through this project, about 250 residents as well as domestic farm animals will benefit from one hand pump.  These pumps will be built in 3 phases where:

  • 5 hand pumps will be built in Phase 1
  • 5 hand pumps will be built in Phase 2
  • 10 hand pumps will be built in Phase 3

PROJECT C:  SEPTIC TANK FLUSH LATRINES
Sadly, a large number of homes in Lucknow do not have flush latrines. The old fashioned service latrines are the source of several diseases in the thickly populated urban and rural areas. Sometimes men and women are forced to use fields for sanitation purposes. 20 flush latrines will be built in Lucknow. These latrines will be built in 3 phases:

  • 5 flush latrines will be built in Phase 1
  • 5 flush latrines will be built in Phase 2
  • 10 flush latrines will be built in Phase 3
