On 5 September 2009, Faza, a peaceful island on the shores of Lamu suffered a tragedy that changed the lives of all its residents. A small kitchen fire turned wild due to strong winds from the Indian Ocean and destroyed 430 houses, leaving 600 people affected and 2,500 homeless. The habitants of the fire lost most of their belongings leaving them without basic necessities such as food and clothing. Even the electricity poles were burnt down along with the wires leaving the entire town in the darkness.
A team from the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya (BMMK) visited Faza Island. Ust. Jamal Abdallah Kasole, a BMMK representative delivered a brief speech to the victims of this tragedy on behalf of the Chairman. Alhaj Abbas Nasser extended condolences and reminded them that during difficult times they should remain steadfast in their faith and should not despair.
One of the victims commented: ‘On that tragic day, most men had gone out fishing and the ladies could not stop the fierce fire. They stared as the fire burnt their ‘makuti’ thatched houses to the ground.’
With the assistance of The World Federation, Africa Federation and numerous other donors, various items were distributed to the victims.

The World Federation is still collecting for this fund as victims still try to recover.
