Every day, the drought in East Africa worsens. Dr. Asgar Moledina, President of The World Federation of KSIMC is currently in the drought-stricken region of the Kenya/Somalia border assessing the situation and working with our partners, The Africa Federation and Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya to provide urgently needed food to the famine victims.
Dr. Moledina is accompanied by Wabil Patron Hujjatul Islam, Seyed Muhamad Musawi and the past Chairman of The Africa Federation.
Upon visiting the Dabaab Refugee camps, Dr. Moledina was saddened and devastated by the horrific conditions these refugees are being forced to live in. He stated, “The situation is horrendous, and seems to be getting worse each day. More and more refugees are arriving at these camps and are receiving no assistance, as there are simply not enough resources. These individuals are in desperate need of assistance including food, water and medical supplies. At least ten to twenty people are losing their lives each day. It is truly devastating to see these people in such dire conditions. “
The Dabaab Refugee Camps comprise 3 major camps. About 1,000 to 2,000 new refugees arrive everyday.
ABOUT THE EAST AFRICA FAMINE CRISIS
A brutal drought coupled with on-going conflict and escalating food prices across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia has left an estimated 11.5 million people on the verge of starvation.
The UN reports that:
- Tens of thousands of people have died after what has been East Africa’s worst drought for 60 years.
- Half of these are children.
- Mortality rates in young children have reached 13 per 10,000 per day in some areas.
- Approximately 12 million people are in need of food aid and as many as 750,000 people may die as the drought worsens in the coming months.
- At least 3.75 million Kenyans and over 500,000 refugees are in need of food assistance immediately
- An estimated 300,000 children and pregnant/breastfeeding women are currently affected by acute malnutrition.
- Due to these extreme circumstances, measles, malaria and dysentery remain the greatest health threats
The United Nation’s technical adviser Grainne Moloney stated, "The rate of malnutrition (among children) in the Bay region is 58%. This is a record rate of acute malnutrition."

AN URGENT APPEAL
Tens of thousands of people are dying in the Horn of Africa where the worst hunger emergency in a generation has unfolded. Please help us meet the huge need for food in this region by donating generously. With your contributions, we can provide more meals and aid to starving families along the Kenya/Somalia border.
There are 426,627 refugees in the Dadaab camps. Since January, 157,934 refugees have arrived in Dadaab and of whom over 116,924 have been registered leaving a backlog of 41,010 refugees needing processing. The Dabaab Refugee camp is just one of these camps that is struggling to keep refugees alive. There are not enough tents for all who arrive and refugees construct makeshift shelters out of branches and scraps of plastic. Men, women and children are choked by whipping clouds of red dust, and the carcasses of dead animals lie everywhere.

Your assistance is needed to provide meals and healthcare to the huge influx of people across the Kenya/Somalia border. Your donation will make a difference between life and death.
