On 17 February 2008 the north-east coast of Madagascar was devastated by Cyclone Ivan. The death toll from this disaster has risen from 44 to 93 people, while the total number of people affected has increased from 145,000 to 332,391. Although Madagascar sits on a cyclone belt and is used to tropical storms, Cyclone Ivan was particularly crushing and the intensity of the storm was similar to Hurricane Katrina which hit New Orleans in 2005.
At this stage we can report that our community members may not have been significantly effected, however we shall endeavour to update the community. Despite this, fallen trees, flattened houses, floods and destruction of buildings, bridges and roadways can be seen for miles and miles. Homes have been destroyed along with their livelihoods.
The World Federation and Africa Federation have united to equally contribute a total of USD 20,000 to help re-establish the lives of some of these victims.
The President of The World Federation, Dr Ahmed Hassam quoted: 'After receiving the news of the cyclone, both The World Federation and Africa Federation have decided to respond together in partnership to help the people of Madagascar. There has been damage to property and livelihoods of many individuals and inshAllah with the support of the community we can work to help rebuild the lives of those affected.'
Let us continue to pray to the Almighty for the safety of the people of Madagascar.
