SOS Programme:  African seniors on board

Updated 30 June 2009

Helping our destitute seniors maintain their dignity and peace of mind is the primary objective of The World Federation’s Sponsor Our Seniors (SOS) Programme. Senior by senior, we continue to make a difference in the lives of our elderly, ensuring them that they are not alone in their struggle to survive their daily hardships. The Relief and Economic Development team is pleased to announce that the SOS Programme is now set up in Africa where 195 senior citizens living in dire poverty will receive monthly financial aid so that they can afford the basic essentials of life.

Working in partnership with the Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania, 25 senior citizens in Tanzania and working in partnership with the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, 170 seniors in Kenya will soon be the pioneers of the SOS programme in Africa.

SPONSORED SENIORS IN TANZANIA
Most of the elders sponsored in Tanzania earn anywhere from £2.50 to £63 per month often working in the agricultural sector or as night watchmen; some of these seniors even hold two jobs to provide for themselves and their families. The few seniors who do not earn anything, are dependent either on their children or on their spouse.

Hadija is a 70 year old senior who earns £15 per month as a casual labourer. She is a widow and has four children. Sadly, she lives alone. She became a Shia Muslim in 1994 and is having a difficult time supporting herself.

SENIORS IN KENYA
170 seniors across 15 villages are being sponsored throughout Kenya. A portion of the sponsored seniors here earn anywhere from £4 to £28 per month, working various jobs.

Abdallah is a 59 year old senior whose trade as a fisherman earns him £13 per month. With this little income, he must support his wife and children, many of whom suffer from epilepsy.

The Sponsor Our Seniors Programme is now sponsoring a total of 348 seniors now.
