Pakistan Flood Relief 2010:  Housing pilot projects begin

SOUTH REGION (UPPER SINDH)
HOUSING
5 different Districts in the upper Sindh region of Pakistan have been affected by flood waters. These include: Kashmor and Kandhkot, Ghotaki, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Sukkur. Across these 5 Districts, over 1,000 houses have been destroyed. Hussaini Foundation has started the construction of 5 new homes in each of these Districts where:

• The size of each home will be 14 feet by 12 feet
• The 5-foot foundation and wall will be made of brick, cement, concrete, and double brick; the rest of the walls will be made of bricks and mud.
• The exterior of the homes will be finished with plaster
• Each dwelling will have 2 windows, one door and ventilations from the back wall
• The floor will be cemented
• The inside walls will be plastered with mud and limestone to keep the homes cool
• The roof will be made of iron guarder, bamboo sticks and mats to be spread with mud paste (gara)

DISTRICT QUAMBER SHAHDADKOT
• Plans are underway to distribute 1,000 food ration parcels in and around the villages of Gaji Khawar and Kubbu Saeed Khan
• Another 105 camps were added in to the camp city in Gaji Khawar; the total number of camps is now 583 with the help of Red Crescent.
• The survey for housing needs in his area is almost complete
• Preliminary observations indicate that the flood water is gradually receding; it may take another 2 months to clear the area.
• The reconstruction phase will likely begin in the Gaji area first.

DISTRICT DADU
• 576 food ration parcels were delivered
• Transportation was arranged for 30 families
• The survey for housing needs in his area is almost complete

OTHER AREAS
• Hussaini Foundation has received a list of 686 applicants who lost their homes
• Relief goods were distributed in Usta Muhammad which included towels, bed sheets and mattresses to 629 families in the villages of Dera Allahyar, Gandakha, Nihal Kot, and Sohbatpur


NORTH REGION
RECONSTRUCTION OF HOUSES
The Hussaini Foundation is committed to building 20,000 houses to help the displaced families. Each house will shelter one family in a one-room (12’ by 14’) plan. The cost of per dwelling is USD $1,000.


ECONOMIC REHABILITATION
Approximately 5,000 families need help to find work that will generate sustainable income to support themselves.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT SO FAR
1.  Established eight area offices at:
• D.I. Khan (Khyber Pakhtoonkwa)
• D.G. Khan (Punjab)
• Rajanpur (Punjab)
• Seetpur (Punjab)
• Muzaffargarh (Punjab)
• Kot Addu (Punjab)
• Laiyyah (Punjab)
• Karor (Punjab)

2.  Constructed 5 one-room houses in 7 areas:  D.I. Khan, Taunsa, Rajanpur, Seetpur, Kot Addu, Laiyyah and Karor. This was a pilot project aimed to evaluate the cost of construction per room and to foresee any difficulties for bulk-construction projects.

 

 

3.  Negotiations are at their final stages with different companies to provide pre-stressed roofs and solid and hollow blocks.
4.  Another contract has been awarded to construct 90 houses at Village Girah Mureed Shah and Basti Sadaat in the District D.I. Khan.
5.  Hussaini Foundation is working on the construction of five model villages; the experience gained from this project will help with future projects. One of these model villages will include one-room shelters, a community centre and water supply scheme. The construction of a model village at Village Shah Wala Thesil Kot Addu District Muizaffargarh has already started. On 13 November 2010, Hussaini Founation’s Patron in Chief - HIWM Sheikh Mohsin Ali Najafi attended a ground
breaking ceremony at Baseera Sadaat, Tehsil Kot Addu, District Muzaffargarh to start construction of 300 houses in the village.
6.  Managing Director Brig. (R) Zamurad Khan Shahin planned a tour to the affected areas from 12th to 14th November to overlook the situation.
