Commemorating the Day of Ashura

Updated 8 December 2011

In history we will not find more tragic events than the Marydom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his Holy Household. Ashura is full of grief. From the brutal slaying of the companions of our Holy Imam (AS), the killings of the valiant Aun (AS) and Muhammad (AS), the trampling of the body of Shah Kasim (AS) under the hoofs of horses, the slaying of the arms and the piercing of the eye of Bab Ul Hawaij (AS) whose mission was to bring water for the children of Ahlul Bayt (AS), to the spear that was stabbed into Hazrat Ali Akber (AS) to the piercing of the Holy neck of Ali Asghar (AS). All the way including the beheading of Shayyud-us-Shuhahada (AS) we can only see tragedy after tragedy. In many cases the trial of tribulations of the Holy Household (AS) only continued after the day of Ashura. The army of the tyrant Yazid didn’t stop at the brutal killings, it took pride in burning the Tents of the Holy Household and looting them. It is impossible in this short article to list all the brutal acts committed, suffice to say that this is the  most tragic tale in Humanity’s history.

Furthermore on this day, let us not forget the strength and patience of Bibi Zainab (AS) the grand-daughter of our Holy Prophet (SAW), as she rose against the tyranny she and the family members faced. She was unshakeable in her belief, and an example of patience and courage through.

Imam Reza (AS) has said: “The one for whom the say of Ashura is a day of tragedy, grief and weeping Allah (swt) The Mighty, The Glorious, shall make the Day of Judgment, a day of joy and happiness for him” (Bihar al-Anwar).

It is of vital importance that our community fully appreciates the importance of Azadaari. We must place emphasis in educating our children about this important institution. Imam As Sadiq (AS) has said: “There is none who recites poetry for Imam Hussain (AS) and weeps and makes other weep by means of It, except that Allah (swt) makes paradise incumbent upon him and forgive his sins.” (Rijal al-Shaikh al-Tusi).

Not only must we grieve profusely, we must also reflect on the message of our beloved Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). We must take this opportunity as a reminder to fight for truth and justice, no matter how difficult it may be.

On this day, let us promise ourselves to walk on the path of our Ahlul Bayt  (AS) and to live our lives learning from their examples.

Our heartfelt condolences to Prophet Muhammad (AS) on the martydom of his grandson and his family.  Our condolences to our 12th Imam - Imam Al-Mahdi (ATFS).  May Allah (SWT) give us all the courage to follow in the teachings of the Prophet and his family and may he hasten the re-appearance of Imam Mahdi (ATFS),
