On Thursday 14 June 2012, a suicide bomber detonated a van packed with explosives in a parking lot about 50 metres from the Holy Shrine of Bibi Zainab (as) in Damascus. Damages reported by witnesses included:
• Fourteen people were wounded
• Shrine of Sayyida Zainab (as) was damaged – shattering windows, knocking down chandeliers and ceiling fans, and fracturing some of the mosaic walls.
• Components of the exploded van were found inside the shrine’s courtyard
• Six tourist buses, more than 30 cars and a small police bus were damaged
Bombings like this one are becoming more and more common in Syria - risking the safety and well being of innocent civilians.
The World Federation condemns this and other similar acts of violence and was deeply saddened to receive the news of this recent attack. We pray for the quick and full recovery of all those who were injured. We also pray to the Almighty through the waseela of the Ahlul Bayt (as) for an end to more senseless, violent attacks in Syria, and other regions of the world.
