ZCSS Graduate: Rama Chirunga Diyo – Mombasa, Kenya

Updated 16 December 2008

Rama Chirunga Diyo was born on 6th July 1984 in Bahakanda Village in Kwale District of Coast Province.

In 1990, he was enrolled at Bahakanda Primary School as well as at the Husayni Madrassah at Bahakanda Centre which was managed by the Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya. This opportunity enabled him to acquire both religious and secular knowledge. Moreover, it was during this time that he began his studies of the Shia Ithna Asheri faith.

In 1999, Rama sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination and passed. Despite achieving the scores that qualified him for a secondary school, there was very little hope that he could join one. His parents just couldn’t afford it as the ghost of poverty was at its best haunting his family.

Rama continued praying to the Almighty Allah to take control of the situation and decide his fate. Alhamdulillah, He made it possible to realize his wish. Through the efforts of Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, Rama joined Form One at Rasul Al Akram Academy in Nairobi, where he was sponsored by the Zainabiya Child Sponsorship Scheme (ZCSS) of The World Federation.

In 2003, Rama wrote another exam for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and passed. Although he had an overwhelming thirst for higher education, at least at a Degree level, he had no means to quench it.

Again, Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, through the BLESS scheme of The Africa Federation, was able to offer him a full sponsorship. In 2006, Rama joined the Mombasa Polytechnic University College to pursue a diploma course in Mass Communication.

On 13 June 2008, he completed the diploma course in mass communication specializing in radio and television production.

Rama Chirunga Diyo expressed:  “I have now Alhamdulillah, completed the course. As such, I fully appreciate and thank my sponsors from deep inside my heart. I am fully aware that were it not for the sponsorships of ZCSS and BLESS, facilitated by Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya, I would not have reached where I am today. I therefore pray to the Almighty Allah to highly reward all those who in one way or the other contributed to my success. May God bless us all.”

There are many such young students who require our support and it would be a blessing if the community could help them by sponsoring 5 scholarships every year. Each scholarship is £500 per annum.
