A Revolutionary I-Opener by Mahdi Abbas Juma

The Madinah and Bab al-Ilm Iran programme marked its 14th consecutive anniversary in the summer of 2016, with this being the first time that I decided to embark upon the course following my university education. This was also the first ever year in the programme that participants were bestowed the honour of being guests in the holy city of Qom for the birth anniversary of Sayeda Masouma (sa), as well as being in Mashhad for the corresponding celebrations for Imam Ridha (as).

THE FEELING OF BEING HOME; LIKE I BELONGED HERE.

By the grace of the almighty Allah (s.w.t.) I finally got the chance to visit Iran, for the first time ever and that too in the course. Alhamdulillah, I have learnt alot of positive things in this camp which InshaAllah, I will try my best to use in my life.
This trip taught me many things; socializing, bravery, individuality independency, responsibility and to stand up for myself.

A QUIENTESSENTIAL, UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY

In the name of Allah (SWT), the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Most people in their lives are lucky enough to have gone to ziyaraat, whether it's to Iran or to Iraq, whether it's with a group or not.  But to enhance the experience,  to give you memories that you will look fondly back on years from now,  to have a quintessential, unforgettable journey - there is no better way, than to embark on this sacred trip.

A PLATFORM FOR CHANGE

"No words can ever do justice to this incredible experience. From the meticulous organisation by the World Federation coordinators, to the caring nature of all the mentors, and most of all to the breathtaking atmosphere within the harams of Bibi Masumah and Imam Ridha, each and every moment in Iran was simply unforgettable.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

"Stepping foot into a new country, a new culture, without the guidance of my parents would have been a scary experience, had we not been welcomed into the open arms of our mentors. Being a part of the Madinah and Bab al Ilm family I had the time of my life. I can never do the course justice in explaining my experiences but I'll try. Being on this course in Iran felt like a home away from home, I rarely missed my family as our exciting schedule kept us busy. From climbing Mount Khizr, to our early morning twilight sessions, the course always had us on our feet and moving.

It is so difficult to sum up an experience that had such a great impact on my life in just a few sentences, but if someone had told me that my perspective on life, the way I think, the things I do, and the way I live will all drastically change during the short duration of the course, I would not believe them, but here I am proven wrong.

A Life Changing Experience

As I sat in the Haram of Bibi Masuma (AS) listening to the moving and heart rending confessions to the Holy Lady (AS), given by brother Amin, I couldn’t stop thinking how lucky I was to be amongst the chosen few to shed a tear out of love of Sayyida Masuma (AS).

A New Beginning by Mentor Rabab Shaheen Kassam

A Journey of a Lifetime By Fatema Khimji from Tanzania

Day Seven:

Its 11am here now and the temperature is at 40°. I have had a 5 hour sleep which should be good enough to get me going for what is my D Day today.

I come out of the tent and see people all dressed in white, some performing their wudhoo whilst some praying despite the intense heat. The Adhaan is then heard and everyone rushes to their tents to perform their prayers. Thereafter the whole place goes quiet.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Friday 22nd August, 2014

I am awed by their inner strength to not allow such things to cloud their ultimate goal in attaining nearness to the Almighty Allah (SWT). When I placed my head on the Turbah in Sujood, my heart skipped a beat and tears filled my eyes as I remembered Imam Hussain (AS) as he lay on the burning sands in his final moments with Sayyeda Zainab (AS) looking on with broken heart.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Wednesday 20th August, 2014

We ended this day with filling up bottles of water from the spring of Nishapour for our family and friends, keen to share a small part of the immense blessings we have gathered from our trip to this land. This was indeed an unforgettable and spiritually uplifting experience!

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Monday 18th August, 2014

There I was, staring at the Holy Dhareeh from a distance. Suddenly, I could feel my heart was lighter, my mood happier, and my soul purer. It was as if Imam Ar-Redha himself had come to welcome me, to remove my sorrows, to allow me to enter into the Haram. As eager as I was to rush inside and get as close as possible to Imam Ar-Redha’s Shrine as I could, I stood outside for a while; contemplating.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Saturday 16th August, 2014

These last few days I have noticed a change within myself, a change that I have been longing for years and finally I have found it, my peace and serenity. Qum has been an experience that I cannot describe as it has no words, you have to be here to understand what emotions and feelings happen within yourself.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Saturday 16th August, 2014

We carried on with a reflection session also lead by Syed about how beneficial our daily classes have been. As agreed by all, we have learnt a great deal as gained a lot of knowledge from the teachers as well as many things that we could relate to as teenagers living in the western world.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Thursday 14th August, 2014

We began the day at Fajr, some of the students went to the Haram to pray, as this has been an option available for us. In the morning, after breakfast, we had our classes.

In our first class we learnt about how to prepare for university life while incorporating our religion into it. We learnt how to plan our day to day life throughout university and about incorporating a little bit of everything to balance our life throughout university.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Wednesday 13th August, 2014

It was, without a doubt another day filled with ma'rifah that we gained from our teachers; Syed Kazmi, Sister Naajiyah and Shaykh Khalfan. It still seems like a beautiful dream that we are indeed so blessed to be learning and developing ourselves under the care and the love of Hazrat Fatima Masuma (AS)

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Tuesday 12th August, 2014

Woken up by the sound of Masuma's alarm at 3.30am - a few girls visited the Haram for Fajr Salat while I stayed back - with the little time alone I had until sunrise I prayed Fajr in a small corner of our dorm. I stepped outside our room to take a walk across the campus, the silence allowed me to reflect on the past few days - I began to write down my thoughts and evaluate my daily targets. Our 7th day at Jamiatul Zahra begins.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Tuesday 12th August, 2014

Today, Allah (SWT) had blessed us with the chance to visit the Haram of Lady Masuma-e-Qum and pray Jama’at Namaaz; after we performed the Ziyarat of the Holy Lady, Bibi Masuma (AS). The recitation by the Mawlana was so beautiful, we got lost in his soothing voice and I felt I could stay there forever.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Sunday 11th August, 2014

After breakfast we left for the Ali-Sadr Cave. The cave is around 115 million years old and is one of the only caves in the world that has such a large lake inside it. The lake is 13km in length. We took a boat ride around the lake - the scenery was out of this world!

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Sunday 11th August, 2014

On Monday we were up by 8AM for breakfast at Ali-Sadr hotel near Hamadan. We left shortly afterwards for Ghear-e-Ali Sadr which is the largest cave containing water in the whole world.

Once we had reached, we split up into groups and got into smaller boats, which took us deeper into the cave. It was beautiful! The water was so clear we could see right through it. After a few minutes we reached a small opening where we got out of the boats and were spoken to by a tour guide.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Sunday 10th August, 2014

Then came the most enjoyable experience of the day and possibly the best of my life - tele cabins and cable cars. These tele cabins rode us all the way up the mountains where we saw a whole lot of natural creations such as huge rocks, water streams and patches of greenery. I couldn't resist but say SubhanAllah at every sight since it increased my evidence of Allah (SWT) being the One and Only Creator.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Saturday 9th August, 2014

We all woke up well and proceeded to the Haram of Lady Masuma (AS) for Fajr prayers. It was a humbling experience to perform our prayers in the Holy Mosque.

Our classes began as usual at 10 in the morning. I personally enjoyed the lessons because they were directly touching our day lives. Most notably was the lesson titled 'Keys to Successful Adulthood' delivered by Br. Rajabali Alidina. In today’s lesson, I learnt about the role of a friend and how they influence our lives. I also learnt that any relation with a lady should be based on need and nothing else.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Friday 8th August, 2014

The day started off with Fajr Namaaz and a short recitation of The Holy Quran by one of the participants. Shaykh Kumail picked one verse from what was recited and the verse was analyzed. This session was similar to that of yesterdays, and was interesting.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Friday 8th August, 2014

This was not a regular Jum’ah for many of us as our day began with Namaaz-e-Shaab and Fajr Jamaat in our Jamia Masjid. The majority of girls shortly dispersed back into their rooms, the handful that remained took the initiative of dedicating the final precious moments of the night to our Master, Imam Mahdi (ajts) with a truly heartfelt, passionate recitation of Dua A'hd and Ziyarat for Imam Mahdi (ajts) by one of our inspirational mentors.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Thursday 7th August, 2014

Today was the second day of the Bab ul ‘Ilm camp and we started the day with Fajr prayers. After Salaat we had a short Quran recitation read by a scholar. We had a short discussion based on one Ayat which the Shaykh specifically chose that he thought would benefit us.

Madinah and Bab – Boys Daily Blog – Wednesday 6th August, 2014

I woke up for Fajr this morning and soon after the CoEJ participants arrived. As I was sleeping, they ate their breakfast and went to sleep. The morning was quiet as the CoEJ boys rested after their tiring journey and woke up at Dhuhr time. After lunch, everyone showered and got ready for the afternoon's activities.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Thursday 7th August, 2014

On Thursday, we woke up at 4.45 am and prayed Salatul Fajr.  My friend and I stayed up to watch the sun rise while sitting near the water fountain. The sun rise was amazing Mashallah!

Breakfast started at 8am and our classes began at 10am. Our first class was with Sayyed Kazmi and in this class we learnt about our good and bad habits.  E.g. – 95% of what we achieve and loose is directly linked to our good and bad habits.

We also learned how to erase our bad habits by diagnosing it and confronting the source and doing Tawassul.

Madinah and Bab – Girls Daily Blog – Wednesday 6th August, 2014

My second morning at Jamiatuz Zahra Hawza was calm and relaxed. We woke up to find that COEJ Participants had arrived from the UK. After introducing ourselves to our new roommates, we all started preparing ourselves for the day’s program.

After Salaat and Lunch, we had a short ice breaker session where we got to know a little bit about each other. The ground rules for the camp were set and the session ended with the mentors and participantssharing their reflections on the etiquettes of Ziyarah to prepare ourselves for the evening trip to the Haram of Seyyida Masuma (AS).

“Inspirational, Motivating and Gratifying”: A mentor recounts her Girls’ Youth Course 2014 experience (India Office)

As I contemplate on how to pen down my experience as a mentor for the recently concluded WF girls’ youth course, my thoughts run to the time when I was a little girl and yearned to go out and explore the world, similar to these girls who were bubbling with exuberance, vitality and an insatiable thirst for learning new things. My mentoring experience to these girls was exhilarating and a source of enlightenment.

Madinah al-Ilm and Bab al-Ilm short summer courses 2014 – Mentor training

Alhamdulillah, we had a good rest before we started the next day in full swing.

Madinah and Bab - Boys Daily Blog - Thursday 15th August, 2013

Thursday 15th August, 2013

The day started off with a short but lazy walk to Al-Mustafa International University. As soon as we entered, we were led to the “Audio Video Room” where pictures were snapped. In no time, we were being taken to the “Imam Khumayni Hall” where we were presented with a short introduction video. This was followed by one of the mentors – Ali Hussein, reciting a Qasida with full Jawsh.
After this, we were given a tour of the university which showcased a variety of facilities such as an in-house tailor, a restaurant, a laundry service etc.

Madinah and Bab - Boys Daily Blog - Wednesday 14th August, 2013

Wednesday 14th August, 2013

Fear. Apprehension. Confusion. These are typical reactions to the first day in a new country with a foreign culture, climate, and language. Being surrounded by new faces – having left all friends and family back at home – doesn’t help. Toss in the fact that the inflated currency system is marred with ambiguity, and that crossing the street is now an extreme sport, and that the temperatures typically reach nearly 40°C in the sweltering afternoon heat… it certainly seems like a nightmare!

Madinah and Bab - Boys Daily Blog - Tuesday 13th August, 2013

Tuesday 13th August, 2013

The third and final day of the mentor training course provided by The World Federation came sadly but surely as the mentors began their day with a reflection of thoughts to explore what each of us discovered about ourselves and how that aspect we discovered will help us develop our mentor-mentee relationship. This exercise of ‘self-reflection’ turned out to be very beneficial as it helped consolidate our thoughts and conclusions from the previous day so that we walk away with a take-home lesson and an aim to achieve.

Madinah and Bab - Boys Daily Blog - Monday 12th August, 2013

Monday 12th August, 2013

Day two of the mentor training programme commenced at 8.15am with breakfast, and most importantly of all, delicious khoja-style tea. The first session was a reflection session led by Brother Yasin and Shaykh Abbas. This session focused on reflecting on the previous day and required us to share one new insight that we had learnt about ourselves and how this will affect our role as a mentor.

So, what did the Muslims do for the Jews?

By David J Wasserstein, May 24, 2012

Islam saved Jewry. This is an unpopular, discomforting claim in the modern world. But it is a historical truth. The argument for it is double. First, in 570 CE, when the Prophet Mohammad was born, the Jews and Judaism were on the way to oblivion. And second, the coming of Islam saved them, providing a new context in which they not only survived, but flourished, laying foundations for subsequent Jewish cultural prosperity - also in Christendom - through the medieval period into the modern world.

Ethics and Practice by Ayatollah Jawadi Amuli

Question: We students do not have access to educationalists of ethical values, what should we do to learn ethics?

Ayatollah Jawadi Amuli: The study of ethics carries a segment of theoretical subjects which can be accomplished by studying, conducting catechization and dialogue sessions, whereas the other segment consists of practical learning which requires guidance and instructions of a mentor.

12 Questions Concerning Fadak

Qur’anic verses and historical documents reveal that the land of Fadak situated near the Fort of Khaibar, formerly belonging to the Jews, was the personal property of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h). It was neither a government property owned by the treasury nor was it war booty. The seventh verse of Surah Hashr, explains the point in detail:

‘Each one of us left a piece of our heart with Imam Ridha (a) and Lady Masooma-e Qum’: Mentor’s review of Madinah and Bab 2013

I applied for the mentoring position for Madinah and Bab in 2012; unfortunately, I was rejected due to my lack of experience in working with the youth in a KSI community setting. However, I had an unwavering commitment to study and support individuals who want to tread the path of Islam. I had to find a way to increase my experience so that I could enter into this unique programme as a mentor. I began searching for opportunities across London in order to teach at Islamic institutions, and found my opportunity with Stanmore Jamaat’s Sunday SI Madressa.

Madinah and Bab 2013: ‘From all over the world we converged’

To put succinctly into words the benefits of the Madinah and Bab course, of which I had the opportunity to attend this past summer, would not do justice to the experience. I gained in many realms.

With respect to acquiring Islamic knowledge, an ongoing journey, we were truly fortunate to be taught, enlightened and guided by such knowledgeable, respectable and humble teachers.

Madinah and Bab 2013: ‘I recommend everyone to experience it’

The Madinah and Bab summer course of 2013 enabled me to gain further knowledge on various topics and about the Ahlul Bayt. Most importantly I was able to seek inspiration from scholars and different places which were visited. This journey was something that not only I was able to cherish whilst being there but until today I feel like I’m living with the experience/memories of yesterday.

Madinah and Bab 2013: ‘home away from home’

3 weeks away from home was quite a challenging thought at first as I'd never stayed away from my family for so long; but it was exciting!

We were picked up from Imam Khomeini Airport at dawn by our mentors and driven to Qum. Our stay at Jamia-tuz-Zahra was marvellous. It was a home away from home. The mentors were amazing; they listened and advised as older sisters do.

The classes were very motivating; a kind of encouragement to look at the brighter side of life and knowledge that will last a lifetime.

Tawassul in Islam – Verdict of the Quran

There are several verses in the Holy Quran that establish the legality of seeking medium (waseelah) to gain divine proximity. These verses clearly reject the belief of the skeptics who reject all waseelah and term Tawassul as Shirk

Click here to read – The Argument of the skeptics against Tawassul

1) In Surah Maaedah (5): 35, Allah orders:

How can one become sure which of the ulema giving advice and lectures are worthy and qualified to so?

Summary of question

How can one become sure which of the ulema giving advice and lectures are worthy and qualified to so?

Question

We live in a community of hundreds of thousands of Muslims and have many ulema--many of whom we do not believe are qualified. How can a person obtain assurance (or certification) that the ulema that are giving advice and lectures are supported and qualified according to the rules of the Shia faith?

Tarawih: Sunnah or Bidah?

Sunnat or Innovation?

The books of Islamic laws and traditions of both Shias and Ahle Sunnat mention innumerable recommended prayers. Some of the prayers exceed a thousand units. The prayer of Tarawih is among the recommended prayers of the Ahle Sunnat and it is performed in congregation in the nights of Ramazan at an estimated twenty units daily.

Experience of first ever Bilal mentor on Madinah and Bab 2013

Updated 15 January 2014

My journey to Iran was a dream come true. I was really looking forward to facing the tombs of the great personalities and having my prayers answered through them.

My first visit to the shrine of lady Masuma left me speechless. I could only stand there with tears streaming down my face and mumble lots of salawaats. At that time I believed that with prayers one can succeed in anything.

Reflections on my trip to Iraq

Updated on 23/12/2013

This year, over two million people around the world will InshAllah flock to Iraq to commemorate Arbaeen. We share below reflections from one of the zawaars who will be going to Iraq this year and inshAllah undertake the walk from the Holy City of Najaf to the land of Karbala:

“In a day’s time, I’ll be leaving with a group of my family and friends, leaving behind everything familiar, to make this amazing trip to the land of my Imams (AS).

I cast my mind back remembering another time, another family who left their hometown, and everything they loved, to venture out into an unknown future. Except their fate was different. For Husayn and his family (AS), only the women and children were to return back. And this drives me on..

Updated on 23/12/2013

It was a really touching moment for me as Jamia was my dream. So every morning that I would wake up, I would look around smiling, thinking to myself, “I’m living my dream”.

No matter where we were from: Dar es Salaam, Dubai, Uganda, Kenya or the UK, together we attempted to gain a small drop from the ocean of knowledge available in the holy city of Qum.

Muharram in Gaza

Updated 13 November 2013

Dedicated to the victims of the Gaza Massacre - 2008/2009

As we commemorate Imam Husayn's revolution of truth and justice, this poem considers our role as Hussaynis in a world wracked by oppression.

Muharram arrived with piercing screams
Playing children bombed to smithereens
Torn limbs shrouded in ash
Lost in the deafening blitz, blinding flash

I heard the echoes fade
As I sat in the mosque and prayed
Safe in His house of peace
Far from the blood and screams

And her tiny, fragile fingers clasped mine
With all my heart, I pledged
My child’s spirit, I would protect
