Event recap: Values Based Education Summit
The Education summit was held at Al Muntazir Islamic International School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 12th to 14th June 2026.
The Summit commenced with a school tour and classroom observations to see Values Based Education in practice at the Al Muntazir Islamic International School, followed by insightful talks by Sheikh Azeem Shirazi and Sr. Makala Cooper.
The keynote was delivered by Sheikh Mohammed Ali Ismail covering ‘What is Values Based Education’, which explored the various approaches to Values Based Education and thereafter linked this to the Quranic vision of education, cultivating Taqwa in the classroom and deepening our understanding so that knowledge becomes service. The session also explored barriers and concerns in integrating values into schools and how educators could make a low-cost start.
To help embed the learning, there was an interactive workshop titled ‘Spiritual Development in Education – Cultivating the Soul in Teachers and Students’ which explored the faculties of the soul, virtues at balance, vices at the extreme, drawing practical examples from Karbala to the classroom, worship as training for the soul, followed by self-regulation – how to return to balancing the four faculties – anger, desire, imagination and intellect.
The summit also featured:
